CENTURIA IV · QUATRAIN XXXVI
The Bound Mountains
Les jeux nouveau en Gaule redresses,
Apres victoire de l'Insubre champaigne:
Monts d'Esperie, les grands lies, trousses:
De peur trembler la Romaigne & l'Espaigne.
The games made new in Gaul redressed,
After victory over the Insubrian plain:
The mountains of Hesperia, the great ones bound and bundled:
For fear a-tremble, Romagna and Spain.
THE MASTER SAYS…
The quatrain has several indications. What interests us is connected with the southern European campaign of the Antichrist. His influence will begin to spread where he can threaten Spain in the west and Romania in the east. Gaul is France, because at this moment the Antichrist’s campaign will already have seized most of France and will be preparing to seize Spain. “Insubrian” — there is a historical subtext here. He says that you can find information about this in an encyclopedia. There is special symbolism here. You can find some parallels in Roman history, when the Roman Empire tried to spread its expansion in a northern direction, i.e., in Central Europe. The Romans could not advance further because of the problems that arose. But the Antichrist will learn from the past and overcome these problems. The quatrain concerns the Antichrist’s campaign in this part of the world. The mountains of Hesperia refer to the mountains in eastern Europe, especially the Alps and the Caucasus. These are mountainous areas, and it is difficult to maneuver there. The Insubres were part of the Gallic tribes on the continent, and are known as Celts who in the 5th century BC crossed the Alps and settled in the place where Milan is now, and in the Po Valley. These tribes were fierce warriors. Not fearing death, they attacked their enemies swiftly and furiously and instantly swept away their army. They destroyed, not created. Over several centuries they were conquered by the Romans, thanks to their endurance, stamina and perseverance. This quatrain relates to what happened after the Antichrist’s victory in Italy.
